Royal Baby Reflexology!

The royal baby and baby reflexology

The birth of a baby is an exciting time for family and friends, but the upcoming birth of a new royal baby seems to have the whole country excited.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge checked into hospital this morning, the imminent birth has got the media in a frenzy of speculation.  At Breathe Holistic Therapy we hope The Duchess is having a postitive birth experience.  There were rumours that Kate Middleton was embracing hypnobirthing to prepare her for labour, so hopefully she is calm and feeling relaxed as she breathes her baby into the world.

New babies can bring with them new beginnings. With kate's apparent openness to holistic therapies and her father-in-laws strong interest in complementary therapy (which he considers as integrated therapy) perhaps the new royal baby may mark the start of a wider appreciation of complementary therapies such as reflexology. It would be wonderful for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to calm their baby with reflexology and maybe enhance breast feeding with essential oils. Opening up the possibility of complementary therapy in family lives would be a brilliant benefit for families across the country.

Infant Reflexology

Reflexology for Babies and children

I was lucky enough to attend an infant and baby  reflexology workshop this weekend with Jennifer Wayte the president of the Federation of Holistic Therapists.  Meeting other reflexologists that work with Babies and infants was a wonderful way to discuss our great experiences working with babies and infants.

Infant reflexology follows the same principle of adult reflexology, reflex points within the hands and feet which correspond with specific organs and body parts within the body itself.  Due to the size and sensitivity of the infant foot the treatment is actually more penetrating and effective.  It is vital to keep movements light and treatments short.  Generally baby reflexology only takes 5 to 6 minutes to perform making it a great  for families to build into their day to day lives.

Touch has been shown to be necessary for infants to thrive, for bonding between parents, grandparents and siblings.   Infant Reflexology is used to comfort and nurture infants.   It is a natural tool to enhance the infant’s wellbeing and is a simple skill for  parent/guardian to learn and enjoy performing.

The outcomes for the infant are often experienced immediately and can soothe an upset infant or help to relieve such discomforts such as tummy pains or constipation.

All infants will react in their own personal way but the usual responses are:

 1. Falling asleep during or after the treatment

 2. Bowel movement

 3. Sneezing

 4. Becoming thirsty or hungry

 5. A slight sweating

There are numerous positive outcomes to reflexology and many childhood discomforts that can be relieved:-

 Relaxation and calming

 Improved quality of life

 Teething problems

 Digestive problems

 Aids sleep and sleep patterns

 Sinus congestion

The loving touch creating comfort and support

 Boosted immune system

 Encourage bonding and confidence

Easing tantrums and in calming a hyperactive child

 Easing teething pain

A natural medium for the child’s need for tactile stimulation.

 Calm a fractious infant

It is important to recognise the work done by Jenny Lee  who is a Chartered Physiotherapist, reflexologist and teacher.   She carried out pilot studies in conjunction with children's GPs, to examine the effects of Reflexology on childhood asthma attacks. The outcome of those studies revealed one third of doctors found they could reduce medication and coughing and the need for the relief puffer was reduced. The sleeping pattern was also improved. This research has enabled reflexologists to learn how to deliver infant reflexology training to parents for assisting their children's well being and strengthening the loving bond.

Infant reflexology is simple to learn. At Breathe Holistic Therapy we provide one-to-one sessions that allow you to learn the basics in just one hour. Follow up appointments allow you to learn techniques specifically tailored to your babies needs.  For more information call 07531121199. or e-mail me

Treats for mums and mums-to-be all year round

It's Mother's Day time again.

Kidderminster is the home of the best mum in the world... my mum! I'm biased of course but mother's day is a great time to make a fuss and pamper the wonderful mums and mums-to-be in our lives.

If its someone's first mother's day that's a really great time to give them the gift of relaxation! It's tough being a new mum and  I know I would have really appreciated some pampering. Mums-to-be don't have to miss out, pregnancy reflexology and massage are available too.  If you want to give a gift from a new baby then  baby reflexology and massage instruction really is a gift for all year round.

The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and goes back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. The early Christians celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Interestingly, later on a religious order stretched the holiday to include all mothers, and named it as the Mothering Sunday. So it wasn't just invented by the card companies to make us spend our pennies!

I love treating people to reflexology and massage that has been given to them as a gift, people really appreciate being given this wonderful time to relax. Mums and mums-to-be are so busy rushing around looking after us all that they often don't give themselves the pampering they deserve, so why not treat them?

Whatever you do for mother's day have a great one, and its a reminder to me that I shouldn't have to wait until mother's day to treat my mum!

Back to School

This blog entry is to share a great tool which is simple to learn and effective for many children with school anxiety. Below is a video of a short reflexology routine you can try with your child. There is more information to help you prepare here. You don't have to do it all, just see how you get on following the routine. For more information do contact me 0753 1121199 or e-mail me .

September heralds the start of a new school year, and although it can be an exciting time, for some  children it's just plain difficult.  Many children seem to struggle with anxiety and stress at the start of a new school year. There are many reasons for this and often they are too young to explain what they are feeling and fearing. This can be distressing not only for the child but also the parent who may feel helpless to ease their child's struggle.  The fact is they have to go into school at the start of the day no matter how much they may cry and cling to you.  Not easy.

I'm a mum and know first hand how difficult and exhausting this experience is.  My son struggled with back to school stress every year.  He loves school but found that initial separation difficult after the long fun school holidays.  I have no magic cures but I have found a number of ways to help my son manage stress and overcome anxiety  during this time.

After lots of talking and trying to understand why he was so anxious I decided to try some of the tools I use to help with stress and anxiety. Massage and reflexology can help a child to manage their stress. Baby massage and baby reflexology isn't just for babies! It's great for children of all ages. Some calming reassuring massage for just a few minutes accompanied by lots of positive words about their ability to cope can be a powerful tool.

And finally, don't forget your own needs. It can be draining and painful when our children are suffering and struggling so take time out to relax yourself. It can be hard to remember to be  kind to yourself and not to feel guilty for leaving them at school.

If you want to learn more we are based in Kidderminster Worcestershire area and run one-to-one baby massage and reflexology instruction or you can host a small friendly reflexology/massage home group.

And if all else fails, remember the father Christmas bargaining tool.. all children want to be on the good list!!

Baby Reflexology, simple and effective.

You can learn baby reflexology one-to-one, choosing exactly what your baby needs. If you have friends with babies you can hold a baby reflexology group at home and all get together to learn and enjoy baby reflexology.

Being a parent can be tough, we don't have all the answers, but baby reflexology is a great skill to add to your parenting tool box!
