Foot Facts

How many bones are there in our feet?

Our feet work hard day after day and we usually don't give them a second thought until they start complaining. When you enjoy reflexology and foot massage sometimes it starts you thinking about those two things stuck at the bottom of our legs! Often when I'm working with people's feet they ask questions about their bones, nerves and joints.

A human foot & ankle is a strong, mechanical structure that contain 26 bones, 33 joints, more than 100 muscles, tendons & ligaments and a whopping 250,000 sweat glands. Sweat glands in the feet produce approximately half a pint of perspiration daily. A third of all the bones in the body are located in our feet. Its not surprise that they benefit from massage with such complex mechanics in two small packages. During an average day of walking, the total forces on your feet can total hundreds of tons, equivalent to an average of a fully loaded cement truck. No wonder they ache!

Walking is the best exercise for your feet. The average person will walk around 115,000 miles in a life time, that's more than four times around the earth! It contributes to your general health by improving circulation and weight control. Standing in one spot is far more tiring than walking because the demands are being made on the same few muscles for a longer length of time. Foot ailments can become your first sign of more serious medical problems. Your feet mirror your general health, so conditions like arthritis, diabetes, nerve and circulatory disorders can show their initial symptoms in your feet. So if your feet are changing or hurting don't ignore them, they may be trying to tell you something.

Here are a few fun facts about feet:

  • During the first year of a child’s life their feet grow rapidly, reaching almost half their adult size.
  • Butterflies taste with their feet.
  • Gannets incubate eggs under their webbed feet.
  • Elephants use their feet to hear, even with those big ears! – they pick up vibrations of the earth through their soles.
  • Shoe size in Britain is measured in barley-corns, a unit of measurement that stretches back to Anglo-Saxon times.
  • The measuring device in shoe shops is called a Brannock Device, after the inventor who designed it in the Twenties.
  • It takes at least five to six months to grow an entirely new toenail.
  • By 12, a child’s foot is about 90 per cent of its adult length.
  • The current Guinness World Record for number of feet smelled — about 5,600, is held by Madelaine Albrecht.

Sun safety and Skin Cancer Awareness

The therapists role in mole checking.

With this wonderful sunny weather more people are taking part in outdoor activities, or just soaking up the rays. I know we don't experience that many heat waves in this country so it's important to remember basic sun safety whilst out and about enjoying the weather.

The British Association of Dermatologists sun safe tips:

Top sun safety tips

You don't have to avoid the sun all year, but taking a few steps when out and about in the summer sun or when on a sunshine holiday will help to protect you from sunburn and the risk of skin cancer.

  • Protect the skin with clothing, including a hat, T shirt and UV protective sunglasses
  • Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm when it’s sunny
  • Use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 (SPF 50 for children or people with pale skin) which also has high UVA protection
  • Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight
  • The British Association of Dermatologists recommends that you tell your doctor about any changes to a mole – if your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a Consultant Dermatologist (on the GMC register of specialists), the most expert person to diagnose a skin cancer. Your GP can refer you via the NHS.

Sunscreens should not be used as an alternative to clothing and shade, rather they offer additional protection. No sunscreen will provide 100% protection

As a massage therapist it isn't uncommon to see clients with sun damaged skin. We are in a great position to point clients at reliable sun safety information but we can also able to help increase skin cancer survival rates by prompting early diagnosis.  Due to the nature of massage we work on areas where melanomas can occur but clients can't easily see themselves, such as the back. Complimentary therapists aren't qualified to diagnose but they can be aware of changes to look out for and spot signs which could help to save a client's life.

There are three types of skin cancer, and all look different. The following ABCD-Easy rules show you a few changes that might indicate a 'melanoma', which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. As skin cancers vary, you should tell your doctor about any changes to your skin, even if they are not similar to those mentioned here.

Remember - if in doubt, check it out! If your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a Consultant Dermatologist, the most expert person to diagnose a skin cancer. Your GP can refer you via the NHS.

ABCD-Easy mole check:

Asymmetry - the two halves of the area may differ in shape

Border - the edges of the area may be irregular or blurred, and sometimes show notches

Colour - this may be uneven. Different shades of black, brown and pink may be seen

Diameter - most melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. Report any change in size, shape or diameter to your doctor

Expert - if in doubt, check it out! If your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a Consultant Dermatologist, the most expert person to diagnose a skin cancer. Your GP can refer you via the NHS.

It's wonderful to be able to enjoy the sunshine and by following the safety tips you can keep you skin safe too.  Remember to keep an eye on your skin and report any changes to your G.P. Early diagnosis is vital and often treatment is quick and straightforward.

Aromatherapy, massage and reflexology skills

As an aromatherapy, massage and reflexology therapist it is vital to keep up to date with new research and training, constantly learning and developing skills to provide the best possible experience and results for out clients. It was wonderful to meet so many of other therapists at the Federation of Holistic Therapists 50th anniversary conference. The FHT Training Congress provided the opportunity to listen to a wide range of expert speakers on aromatherapy, advanced massage and reflexology, it was also ideal for meeting other like-minded therapists and talking to reputable therapy training and product suppliers.

It was fantastic to meet and learn from other therapists and trainers in aromatherapy, advanced massage and reflexology. Lectures and workshops to develop my expertise in areas such as individually blending the perfect aromatherapy oil for my clients and advanced massage to really help with painful stiff muscles were enjoyable and educational. Expanding my skills in areas such as facial reflexology allows me to offer treatments even more tailored to my client's unique individual needs. You can discuss your needs before any treatment to ensure you enjoy the best treatment for you at that time.

You can spot me on the photo...the one on the left wearing spots!

Treats for mums and mums-to-be all year round

It's Mother's Day time again.

Kidderminster is the home of the best mum in the world... my mum! I'm biased of course but mother's day is a great time to make a fuss and pamper the wonderful mums and mums-to-be in our lives.

If its someone's first mother's day that's a really great time to give them the gift of relaxation! It's tough being a new mum and  I know I would have really appreciated some pampering. Mums-to-be don't have to miss out, pregnancy reflexology and massage are available too.  If you want to give a gift from a new baby then  baby reflexology and massage instruction really is a gift for all year round.

The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and goes back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. The early Christians celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Interestingly, later on a religious order stretched the holiday to include all mothers, and named it as the Mothering Sunday. So it wasn't just invented by the card companies to make us spend our pennies!

I love treating people to reflexology and massage that has been given to them as a gift, people really appreciate being given this wonderful time to relax. Mums and mums-to-be are so busy rushing around looking after us all that they often don't give themselves the pampering they deserve, so why not treat them?

Whatever you do for mother's day have a great one, and its a reminder to me that I shouldn't have to wait until mother's day to treat my mum!
