Words on Relaxation

As a reflexologist I am a huge advocate of the benefits of relaxation. I regularly share with my reflexology clients in Kidderminster how relaxation benefits their bodies right down to a chemical level. The physiological effects of the relaxation response are huge and fantastic for your well being.

I think, however, that my wonderful clients come back time and time again because of how relaxation feels. That wonderful feeling of release when you are deeply relaxed is so hard to put into words, but we love it and we want to experience it over and over again!

I have been exploring poetry about relaxation to try and capture the feeling in words, but it seems that it is so personal and unique we would all describe it differently. Below are some of the poems I have enjoyed while exploring this topic.

The first poem: "Relaxing" is by Alison Smith and can be found on the poem hunter website.

The second poem is from Springboard Stories and written by Reverend Robert Berd

The final poem I'm sharing here is from All Poetry and written by Jacqueline Shukow.

Trying to capture the essence of relaxation is difficult, we often define such positive experiences by the negative feelings they counteract. It is so easy to see relaxing as a freedom from stress and anxiety, which of course it is, but it can be interesting to develop a sense of the experience for what it is rather than what it is not.

Foot Care

Our feet work hard everyday and a little TLC can really help you to avoid foot pain and problems. Your feet take the weight of you body, so if you do develop foot problems these can quickly lead to discomfort and affect the way you walk. This can then lead to knee, hip and back pain. Looking after your feet can often help to prevent these problems.

It is important to wash your feet often. Always try not to go to bed without washing your feet. If you leave dirt on the skin’s surface, it can become irritated and infected. By washing your feet in the evening you ensure the removal of this contamination. It is vital that you dry your feet thoroughly after washing them, especially between the toes which is where germs such as Athlete's foot can easily breed. You can apply a foot cream if you wish.

Skin and nail Care:

Remove hard skin regularly but gently with a pumice stone or foot file.  If you have diabetes or circulatory problems then always seek professional care for the removal of hard skin and toe nail cutting.
Always trim your toenails straight across, never at an angle or down the edges. This can cause ingrown toenails.

Shoes and socks:

Shop for shoes in the afternoon as feet swell as the day goes on and if shoes fit in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest, you can be assured they will always be comfortable. If you have to wear heels at work, wear comfortable shoes to and from the office and only wear your smart shoes once you're in the office. Also, try to vary the heel height, between low, medium and high.  It is important to wear the right shows for your chosen activity. If you are walking wear supportive shoes for example.  Flip-flops can be great for protecting your feet from foot bugs in pools and changing room but don't wear them all the time. They don't provide support for your feet and can give you arch and heel pain if you wear them too much.

Change your socks daily to avoid foot odour. Socks need to fit your feet well, not too tight or too baggy. It is also important that socks do not cut in around your ankles. If you find you have rings around your ankles at the end of the day then look out for soft/comfort topped socks that do not dig in. Socks made from natural fibre such as wool or cotton can help minimise sweating and odour. Our feet sweat into our shoes which can leave them damp and bacteria can start to grow. If the same shoes are worn the next day then your warm feet will promote the growth of more bacteria. To minimise this it is important not to wear the same shoes on consecutive days. Leaving a minimum of 24 hours between allows the shoes to dry out.

Treat your feet:

Feet work very hard and are often ingnored but they really benefit from a treat whenever possible. You could choose a relaxing or refreshing foot soak after a hard days work. A massage such as reflexology can benefit your whole body but also give your feet a boost too.

If you are concerned about foot problems or foot pain then seek advice from your G.P. or chiropodist.

Mobile Reflexology

Try reflexology to boost you in 2013

Its the new year and as a combination of the Christmas period and the grey weather many of us are feeling emotionally drained and physically exhausted. To lift ourselves out of this we often focus on new year resolutions as a way to move into the year in a positive frame of mind.  Looking at our behaviour and aiming to change it to help us feel better is a great move, but we all know how hard it is to make those changes.

New year resolutions often fail before January is over, leaving us feeling unsatisfied with our life style choices. Unhealthy behaviours can be adopted as a way to cope with stress, for some its smoking and for others its drinking alcohol or eating sugary foods. Trying to stop these things can cause more stress and so the unhealthy circle continues.  Why not choose to add in behaviours to help manage stress and cope with anxiety instead of stopping the unhealthy coping methods straight away. If you can lower stress then those behaviours can be easier to stop.

Reflexology and massage is a brilliant stress buster. Clients often say how they have never felt more relaxed as they feel the stress melt away. With mobile treatments you don't even have to travel. There is no need to plan your route to the salon, search out a parking space or run the always present errands on your way into town.  Simply book your treatment and relax. The mobile reflexology therapist at Breathe Holsitic Therapy will bring everything you need. You just put your feet up and feel your stress melt away.

Mobile reflexology treatments are available within 12 miles of DY11, including: Stourbridge, Droitwich, Hagley, Worcester and Bewdley.

If you would prefer to visit the reflexologist at the treatment room that is also available

Ultimate Relaxation for Body and Mind.

Reflexology + Relaxation Soundtrack = Ultimate Stress Busting

Life for many of us is hectic, rushed and stressful. Finding time to relax is often a luxury we don't allow ourselves.  Stress management is a vital part of promoting well being.

After a reflexology treatment many of my clients say they can't remember when they last relaxed like that. They talk about how calm they feel and how they feel refreshed and revitalised. Many say they didn't realise how much stress they were holding in their bodies until they let it go. As a therapist it's wonderful to hear that you are helping people to achieve relaxation, but I would love them to be able to take the key to this relaxation home with them in their pocket.

Our bodies and mind learn to associate certain experiences with particular emotions and behaviours. You may smell bread cooking and hear your tummy grumble and feel your mouth watering.  A certain song may take you right back to the summer holiday when you first heard it.  This is a natural process, so why not use it to trigger relaxation?

I have worked with Mark Powlett Hypnotherapist  to create a calm and tranquil soundtrack to truly enhance your relaxation whilst you enjoy your reflexology treatment. This includes beautiful visualisations and guided relaxation.  The soundtrack is a calming and comforting way to optimise your relaxation. A version of this recording can then be yours to use at home.

Your mind and body will associate this soundtrack with your relaxing reflexology treatment.  When you listen to the soundtrack in-between your reflexology appointments you can easily feel that deep sense of relaxation. You really will have a key to relaxation in your pocket!

Mother's day : 3rd April 2011

Kidderminster is the home of the best mum in the world... my mum! I'm biased of course but mother's day is a great time to make a fuss and pamper the wonderful mums and mums-to-be in our lives.  I know, we shouldn't need one special day to remind us how great mums are. But of all the "hallmark" days I think that on this day we can put any cynicism to one side and jump in and celebrate mums!

The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and goes back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. The early Christians celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Interestingly, later on a religious order stretched the holiday to include all mothers, and named it as the Mothering Sunday. So it wasn't just invented by the card companies to make us spend our pennies!

I love treating people to reflexology and massage that has been given to them as a gift, people really appreciate being given this wonderful time to relax. Mums and mums-to be are so busy rushing around looking after us all that they often don't give themselves the pampering they deserve, so why not treat them?

Whatever you do for mother's day have a great one, and its a reminder to me that I shouldn't have to wait until mother's day to treat my mum!

Is 2011 your year to start putting your needs first?

Happy new year!

I hope 2011 has started well. I have been thinking that it is time to start putting my needs further up the to-do list. How often do you find yourself thinking of things you'd love to do for your well being but saying you don't have the time? This year is where I start to move my wishes up that list.

This time of year the days are dull, the nights are long and it's easy to feel exhausted and plain old fed up! It is so important to look after yourself and not allow life to leave you feeling run down.  Treating yourself to massage or reflexology can really lift your mood and energy levels.  Treating yourself doesn't have to take hours and if its reflexology you love then I can even come to you!  Yes, to enjoy and hour of blissful relaxation all you have to do is call and arrange a reflexology home visit.

If you think 2011 is the time when you move your needs up the to-do list then I say "go for it!!" I am promising myself a little more love and care this year.Time to breathe.

Good luck with your new year and your time to breathe too.

Talking Maternity Reflexology on BBC Hereford and Worcester

Today I was lucky enough to be invited onto the Tony Fisher show on BBC Hereford and Worcester. Last week the morning show had a feature on traumatic births and this week they asked me along to talk about how reflexology can help woman achieve a happy healthy pregnancy, promoting positive pregnancy experiences.

It was great to have this opportunity to spread the word about complementary therapy in pregnancy. Maternity reflexology  really can help many women to cope with the strains of pregnancy, both physically and emotionally.  Swollen feet, sleepless nights, mood swings and back aches can all be helped with reflexology. It is an accessible treatment, just slip off your shoes, find a comfortable position and enjoy an hour of blissful relaxation for you and your baby.  Plus if you don't feel like going out in the cold then I can bring the treatment to you!

So a big thanks to BBC Hereford and Worcester for the chance to spread the word on the benefits of maternity reflexology.
