Massage and reflexology during pregnancy

maternity anf foot.jpg

Pregnancy is a time of great change for a woman's body. Many physical changes alter the posture and this in turn can worsen the physical stress on the woman's body. Pregnancy is not an illness but some women experience complaints such as muscular aches and pains, headaches and swelling. Massage and reflexology can be an effective way of supporting women during pregnancy. These therapies can also benefit women emotionally, helping promote relaxation and connection with their baby.

It is essential to choose a therapist that is trained and experienced on maternity treatments. At Breathe Holistic Therapy our therapist has undertaken further training in working with pregnant clients. This includes training relating to serious complications of pregnancy and the importance of appropriate referral. Massage and reflexology are not a replacement for midwife or medical care. Our therapist works with the consent of your midwife or doctor to ensure the therapy is not contraindicated. Following professional guidelines we do not begin treatments until after your first scan at around 12 weeks.

Massage is a wonderful way to connect with your new pregnant body. Aches and tension may ease and muscles relax during the massage. You may be wondering how massage can be possible with your bump? At Breathe Holistic Therapy our therapist is trained in side lying massage techniques so you and your baby are both very comfortable.

Maternity reflexology is a popular treatment enjoyed by many women. There are a number of midwives and maternity wards that now include reflexology in their care. This treatment in pregnancy allows you to ease off your shoes and sit back to enjoy an hour of relaxation.  As you relax you convey positive, relaxed, tranquil emotions to your baby. A reflexology massage feels wonderful but also provides you with time to breathe and enjoy your pregnancy.

Pregnancy is a time of such change and transformation massage and reflexology can provide powerful tools to support  women at this exciting time. Working with pregnant clients is always a privilege and a wonderful aspect of the work at Breathe Holistic Therapy.

Royal Baby Reflexology!

The royal baby and baby reflexology

The birth of a baby is an exciting time for family and friends, but the upcoming birth of a new royal baby seems to have the whole country excited.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge checked into hospital this morning, the imminent birth has got the media in a frenzy of speculation.  At Breathe Holistic Therapy we hope The Duchess is having a postitive birth experience.  There were rumours that Kate Middleton was embracing hypnobirthing to prepare her for labour, so hopefully she is calm and feeling relaxed as she breathes her baby into the world.

New babies can bring with them new beginnings. With kate's apparent openness to holistic therapies and her father-in-laws strong interest in complementary therapy (which he considers as integrated therapy) perhaps the new royal baby may mark the start of a wider appreciation of complementary therapies such as reflexology. It would be wonderful for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to calm their baby with reflexology and maybe enhance breast feeding with essential oils. Opening up the possibility of complementary therapy in family lives would be a brilliant benefit for families across the country.

Fertility reflexology

I was lucky enough to spend a day working with Barbara Scott, founder and  trainer at Reproductive Reflexology. Trying to conceive is an exciting time but for some couples it becomes a difficult and painful experience.  Conventional medicine is moving forward and provides many treatments to enhance fertility but sometimes complementary therapy can be a great way to support the process. Reflexology is a natural and non-invasive therapy enjoyed by many couples who are trying to conceive. Barbara Scott explains how reflexology can promote natural fertility and for some couples this may be enough. Reflexology may be beneficial for both the man and the woman and for some couples it is a great way to remove the pressure from the process and begin to relax and feel more positive about their fertility.

If you are trying to conceive then reflexology is an enjoyable therapy that may make the journey more positive and relaxed.
